❗Record levels of flooding, driven by heavy rainfall and storms, continue to severely affect the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. As of May 13th, the death toll from these storms is 143, and over 327,000 people have been displaced from their homes.

👉 Significant population declines and returns have been detected across 54 of 105 districts within and near the areas of most significant flooding impact, based on data from Meta. Key mobility trends across the region are detailed in this report’s “Movement” section. Data from the Facebook platform on population is based on a high sample size (-17%) of the total population in Rio Grande do Sul. The baseline district-level Facebook population is highly correlated with Brazil’s census population, with an R2 value of 0.98.
